Seeing with the Strong Programme

چکیده

Using the Strong Programme developed in Edinburgh 1970s clarifies how to do sociology of science freed from Enlightenment paradigms testing for Truth. This paper uses, as an example, case Lewis Binford and his wife (in 1960s) Sally Rosen, revealing Rosen’s work make Lewis’s writing clear persuasive. was efficient cause Binford’s success with New Archaeology.

Seeing with the screen

The new technologies of visualization have turned the computer screen into a universal and highly versatile interface for the representation of scientific knowledge. Images, once regarded as mere illustrations of primarily theoretical and experimental advances, have moved centre stage where knowledge is generated from the confluence of vast amounts of raw and unintelligible data. The computer s...

Seeing with the Brain

We see with the brain, not the eyes (Bach-y-Rita, 1972); images that pass through our pupils go no further than the retina. From there image information travels to the rest of the brain by means of coded pulse trains, and the brain, being highly plastic, can learn to interpret them in visual terms. Perceptual levels of the brain interpret the spatially encoded neural activity, modified and augm...

Seeing Double: Strong Gravitational Lensing of High-redshift Supernovae

With the advent of large, deep surveys, the observation of a strongly gravitationally lensed supernova becomes increasingly likely. High-redshift surveys continue apace, with a handful of type Ia supernovae observed to date at redshifts of one or greater. In addition, a satellite (SNAP) has been proposed dedicated to observing thousands of supernovae per year out to a redshift of 1.7. Although ...

Seeing Beyond Seeing with Enhanced Deep Tracking

Deep Tracking ([1]) is a recently proposed theoretical framework for end-to-end unsupervised visual tracking. Researchers have successfully applied the framework to directly predict full unoccluded space occupancy grid map from raw laser input data. Compared to traditional visual tracking methods on robotics and autonomous driving, which heavily relies on real world knowledge, the learning fram...
